Akira Toriyama, Visionary Creator of Dragon Ball, Passes Away at 68

Renowned Japanese manga artist and game character designer Akira Toriyama, best known for creating the iconic Dragon Ball franchise, has passed away at the age of 68. The tragic news emerged from an official statement released on the Dragon Ball website, as well as from Toriyama’s Bird Studio. He succumbed to an acute subdural hematoma on March 1, leaving the world of manga and gaming in mourning.

With a career spanning over four decades, Toriyama has been a colossal figure in the manga and anime industries. His passing was particularly poignant as he was actively involved in several ongoing projects. The announcement on the Dragon Ball website expressed deep regret over the loss of his future contributions, highlighting the significant impact he had made throughout his 45-year-long career.

 

 

Private Funeral and Family’s Request for Privacy

A private funeral ceremony was conducted, attended only by family members and a few close relatives. Respecting the family’s wishes, the announcement urged the public and media to refrain from interviewing his family or sending flowers, condolences gifts, or other offerings. There is currently no decision regarding any future public memorial service.

Toriyama’s influence extends beyond manga. He was also a pivotal figure in the video game industry, lending his unique art style to games like Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest, and Blue Dragon. Fans can anticipate the release of some of his posthumous works. This includes the upcoming Sand Land RPG, based on his 2000s manga, and the new Dragon Ball anime series, Dragon Ball Daima.
